Manchesters As Pets
Manchester Terriers come in two sizes (Toy Manchesters weigh under 12 pounds and Standard Manchesters weigh 12-22 pounds), but no matter what size they are they are always happiest when they're with "their people". While all dogs need daily exercise and mental stimulation, Manchesters are adept at adjusting their activity level to their owners'. Whether you are watching a movie or reading a book, your Manchester will want to sit as close as possible to you. Hiking and jogging, with proper conditioning, is equally appealing to the Manchesters' athletic abilities and dog sports are a Manchester's delight! Agility, flyball, obedience, conformation, lure coursing, tracking and scent detection are just a few of their favourites.

The Manchester Terrier is keenly observant, very responsive to his owner and may be discerning and reserved towards strangers. This is not a dog that will meet everyone with a bouncy, Labrador Retriever-style greeting. A Manchester is more likely to stand and observe. If a person tries to be 'too friendly, too soon', the Manchester Terrier will probably just move away. This is a breed that takes its time observing and assessing situations and people. Starting at an early age, it's important to properly socialize all Manchesters with a wide variety of people, children, situations and other animals. Socialization should continue throughout the dog's lifetime to instill confidence and ensure the dog is at ease in all situations. Early obedience and puppy socialization classes are recommended and can provide an excellent opportunity for owners to bond with their new addition.

And what about kids? The breed can make an excellent addition to a young family and delight in running and playing with their little people. As with any breed, puppies must be properly socialized with children from a young age. It is important that children are taught to treat all dogs respectfully. As a rule, no small child should be left unattended with any dog of any breed.
The Manchester Terrier is graced with an easy-care coat and virtually no doggie-smell. In warm weather Manchesters seek out the sun's rays and have even been known to splash in warm water for fun. When temperatures fall, however, it can be challenging to convince a Manchester Terrier to go outdoors. A sweater or light coat will help keep this dog more comfortable on chilly days. At very cold temperatures, most Manchester Terriers prefer to keep their visits outdoors brief. Their passion for burrowing under blankets is renowned, regardless of the temperature and you can be sure they will quickly dive under the covers if given the chance.
