DNA Tests and Result Statistics
Available Tests
Three DNA health tests are currently available for the Manchester Terrier:
- von Willebrand's Disease
von Willebrand's Disease (vWD) is a bleeding disorder caused by an inherited deficiency of one of the 13 clotting factors of the blood. A number of companies provide this testing in North America. - Juvenile Cardiomyopathy in Toy Manchester
Juvenile Cardiomyopathy is a heart problem affecting young Toy Manchester Terriers. While the problem was once fatal, a DNA test is now available from the University of Minnesota's Canine Genetics Lab. - Xanthinuria
Xanthinuria causes excess levels of xanthine in the urine, leading to formation of Xanthine stones. It can cause urinary stones or kidney failure in Toy Manchester Terriers. A DNA test is now available from the University of Minnesota's Canine Genetics Lab.
- Progressive Rod-Cone Degeneration - Progressive Retinal Atrophy
PRCD-PRA is a common inherited eye disease in many dog breeds and carriers have been found through genetic testing within the Manchester Terrier breed. It causing gradual degeneration of the retina's photoreceptor cells (rods and cones), leading to night blindness first, then day blindness, and eventually total blindness. It's an autosomal recessive disorder, meaning a dog must inherit two copies of the mutated gene to be affected, but carriers (with one copy) can still pass it on. DNA tests are readily available from a multitude of labs.
